Michael J. Shepard

Michael Shepard is a nationally recognized trial lawyer and a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers. His practice focuses on white collar criminal defense and related civil litigation, internal corporate investigations, and on trials of any kind. Included among Michael’s six recent trials is his leading a team of lawyers that won a defense verdict for the former CEO of JDS Uniphase Co. in a US$20 billion securities fraud class action; he has successfully tried about 40 cases, including securities fraud, bribery and corruption, and tax violations. His internal investigation work emphasizes Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and financial reporting issues; he has led inquiries in Europe, Asia, and throughout the United States, and has successfully resolved matters for corporate and individual clients with the Department of Justice, the SEC, and other agencies.

Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Michael was a shareholder at the law firm Heller Ehrman LLP. He also served as federal prosecutor and as Chief of the Special Prosecutions Division for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Chicago, where he prosecuted many high-profile corruption and white collar fraud cases. He was promoted to positions of increased authority within the Department of Justice, including service as Chief of the Public Integrity Section of the Criminal Division in Washington, D.C., and later, by appointment of Attorney General Janet Reno and the United States District Court, as Interim United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois (Chicago). Michael also served as a law clerk to The Honorable Walter J. Cummings on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and was the senior articles editor of the Stanford Law Review.
